STEM team assembling a production line

About us

A mechanical background. Work done on site.

Since 2014 we have put our skills at the service of machinery builders and of the companies that run their machines. We install, commission, overhaul and maintain industrial machines and production lines, with our own teams on the customer's site, in Italy and worldwide.

Where we come from

From the workshop bench to the site

We met on the bus to technical college, talking about an engine that needed rebuilding. We stripped it down and got it running again, and the small workshop lent to us by a grandfather became our own over the school years that followed: two benches, hand tools, a lathe and a milling machine.

After graduating we went to work for others. We started together in a converting machinery company, then our paths separated: one of us stayed in converting, the other moved on to corrugated board machinery and then to the assembly of centrifugal compressors and steam turbines. In 2014 we founded STEM together.

We rented a small workshop and bought a new CNC milling machine with our first bank loan. One of us was away on site, the other machined the parts. Those were years of hands-on experience with materials, machining and tolerances.

When price pressure made subcontract machining unsustainable, we chose to concentrate on industrial installation work. We took onto the shop floor what we had learned by making the parts: knowing how a component is produced helps you understand how to fit it, measure it and check it. That is the experience our work is built on today.

Our scope

What we do, and what we don't

We work on the machine and on everything needed to install it, complete it and keep it running. We work on our customers' sites and in our own workshop, depending on what the job requires.

Complete industrial line, ready to go into production

What we do

  • Installation and commissioning

We install industrial machines and production lines to the builder's or the customer's drawings, through to completion and support during start-up.

  • Dismantling, moving and reassembly

We move machinery inside the plant. For transfers between sites we carry out the dismantling, the preparation for transport and the reassembly at destination.

  • Steelwork and structures serving the machine

We fabricate and install guard rails, stairs, walkways, supports and guards. We complete the job with pipework and insulation, panelling and soundproof enclosures.

  • Maintenance, overhaul and revamping

We work both in our workshop — on rolls, calenders, assemblies and smaller transportable machines — and on site, on machines and plant already installed. We carry out overhauls, replacements, modifications and alignments as the job requires.

  • Connections serving the machine

We make the electrical connections on board the machine, together with the pneumatic and hydraulic lines included in the job, coordinating with the other activities needed to reach production.

  • Support with CE marking

We support the customer through CE marking, working with the engineering practices we cooperate with for the assessments and the documentation required.

  • Planned interventions

We organise maintenance and overhauls during the shutdowns agreed with the plant, within the planned window.

What we don't do

  • Machine design and sales

We do not design or sell industrial machines and production lines. We work to the drawings and specifications of the builder or of the customer, with whom the design remains.

  • Transport between sites

We do not transport machinery between sites: that is handled by haulage companies. We take care of the dismantling, preparation and reassembly included in our scope.

  • Breakdown call-out and standby

As a rule we do not provide breakdown call-out or a standby service: our work is planned shutdowns. Dedicated support can still be agreed, depending on what the plant needs.

  • Fixed electrical installations

We do not build the plant's fixed electrical installations. Our electrical scope is the machine itself and the connections included in the job.

Who runs the company

A shared background, two complementary roles.

We founded STEM together and we still run it ourselves, with complementary responsibilities. Emanuele looks after customers, teams and sites; Stefano looks after contracts, procedures and the administration of the business. The experience we share, in the workshop and on site, is what our decisions are built on.

Emanuele Pacini

Partner, director and legal representative

  • Commercial contact
  • Technical contact for site work

Mechanical technical diploma; specialist fitter with advanced mechanical, electrical and plant skills. He gained his experience with industrial machinery builders and speaks fluent English.

Today

He handles the technical and commercial relationship with customers, from the site survey through to quotations and negotiation. He organises the teams and the sites, and still works away with the crews, stepping in directly on assembly work and on the more difficult technical problems.

Stefano Giugliano, partner and director of STEM

Stefano Giugliano

Partner, director and legal representative

  • Legal and contract affairs
  • Administration, procedures and compliance

Law graduate of Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome. Chartered industrial technician, licensed to practise and entered in the Italian Register of Industrial Technicians of Pistoia under no. 636. ANCES trainer in occupational health and safety, with a background in industrial assembly and CNC machining.

Today

He handles contracts, company procedures and documentation, including the risk assessment document and the organisational model under Legislative Decree 231/2001. He deals with banks, suppliers and lawyers, with the formalities tied to hiring, and with the coordination of the employment consultant and the accountant.

How we work

From site survey to handover

Survey with a total station before assembly

Every job calls for different skills, equipment and organisation. Before we start we agree the activities, the timing and the respective responsibilities with the customer. While the work is under way we coordinate with their engineers and with the other contractors on site.

  1. 01

    Site survey

We assess the work to be done, the room to manoeuvre, the access routes and the lifting equipment available. We go through the technical documentation and agree the operational requirements, including any shutdown windows.

  2. 02

    Quotation

We set out the work included, the make-up of the team, the equipment and the time expected. We make clear what we supply and what the customer needs to have in place.

  3. 03

    Team on site

We organise the people, the equipment and the documentation the job requires. We follow the work as it progresses, keeping in touch with the customer and dealing with what comes up along the way.

  4. 04

    Checks and handover

We check the work carried out and run the tests included in our scope. Where the job covers it, we support the customer and the machine builder during testing and start-up.

Our people

Teams rotate. The work carries on.

Our teams are made up of STEM employees, with the technical skills, the training and the certifications required for the work they do. Working together, from one site to the next, means knowing the trade and knowing how your colleagues work.

On longer jobs teams may rotate. We organise the handover ourselves: whoever takes over receives the information on the work already done, on what is still open and on what has been agreed with the customer.

That is how we keep the work moving even when the people on site change.
